Description

The Leica R3 "Safari" went into production in 1977. One of the motivating reasons for this model was the recurring demand from the German military for Leica M cameras in olive green.
The following lenses were also available in olive green finish: Elmarit-R 2,8/28mm, Summicron-R 2,0/50mm, Summilux-R 1,4/50mm (in two different versions) and Elmarit-R 4,0/180mm. There was also a matching version of the Leica Trinovid 10x22c binoculars, a bag made of olive-green canvas and an olive-green Rimowa case for the "Safari" edition.

The cameras are engraved with a special serial number composed of a letter from the name “LEICA” followed by 3 digits.
The "Safari" lenses do not have special serial numbers.
