Description
When the Leica R8 was launched on the market in 1996, the lens system of the Leica R series was also fundamentally revised and partly redesigned.
In the course of these provisions some of the best varifocal lenses for miniature SLR cameras were created.
A legendary reputation acquired the Vario Elmarit R 2.8/35-70mm ASPH. not only because of the high initial opening, but also because of the complex mechanical design (with two optical groups for the focal length setting!) and the excellent imaging performance.
According to rumors, the manufacturing process of the lens was so elaborate and critical that almost half of the built lenses did not pass the Leica quality test on the first try. The factory tolerances for the R 2.8/35-70mm ASPH. were extremely tight and it is assumed that not even all 600 units were produced from the serial number block they had been given.
Everyone who owns the lens praises its imaging performance, the color reproduction and the contrast. Leica themself stated that the R 2.8/35-70mm ASPH. would have the quality of comparable fixed focal lengths in the R system!
